Demotion

We all know what it’s like to be overlooked, whether it’s being rejected from jobs, ignored by friends, or even by our families. Daniel perhaps may not have known this feeling well, having been favoured by King Nebuchadnezzar for so long, but when the next king Belshazzar took over, Daniel was pushed out. Belshazzar had a whole host of his own appointed advisers, scholars and astrologers at his command. Why would he need someone like Daniel?

But when Belshazzar was faced with a terrifying dilemma, it didn’t take long for his advisers to crumble. As he was throwing a feast, writing suddenly appeared on one of the walls and no one was able to translate it. It worried the king enormously when no one could help. And as the queen stepped in to offer Daniel’s assistance, the king had to rethink his choices.

What about Daniel’s demotion?

You might be wondering: if Daniel was such a wise and godly man, why was he pushed aside? Often we feel that because we are God’s chosen people, we should be showered with blessings and never know any hardship. But we forget that an easy path in this world is not guaranteed (John 16:33). We see hundreds of godly men and women in the Bible go through endless hardships, from the Israelites wandering the desert for 40 years to the Christians persecuted by Saul before his conversion. Daniel himself, even though he was highly favoured by many, was at another time thrown into the lions’ den to die.

God never promised us an easy life, but what he has promised us is his never-ending love and his constant presence with us. God will support us through anything if we ask him for help, and in my experience, we will build a stronger relationship with him as a result (Heb. 13:5-6).

‘Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him.’ (James 1:12)

  1. A lovely article Charlotte, I love Daniel. I came across ‘Beroean’ as Ruth McCarty sent me an article her daughter Norma had written. John (Bowler) told me he was sent it, and he forwarded on a copy yesterday and I read your contribution. Sending love

  2. An excellent article Charlotte. It takes a strong character to keep going when they are often overlooked. Thank you for reminding us of God’s steadfast love and faithfulness to us in all of life’s circumstances. Lots of love . Mum x
